Statement of condolences concerning the loss of hundred lives of jade miners due to a landslide at a jade mining site in Wae-Khar village in Hpakant
4 July 2020
Our Three Brotherhood Alliance is deeply saddened to hear that hundreds of jade miners of Myanmar nationalities, who have to labor in perilous conditions for their survival, were killed and injured by a landslide after heavy rainfall at 6:00 am on 2 July 2020 in Wae-Khar village in Hpakant township of Kachin.
Myanmar nationalities are facing challenges and difficulties for their livelihood due to the problem of rising unemployment precipitated by economic crisis, internal instability, and the recurrence of the flames of civil war in Myanmar. Our organization believes that this is caused by political problems, which are not solved by political means yet.
On the other hand, Myanmar nationalities would be safeguarded for their livelihood only after political problems have been practically solved through political dialogue, which would give us a great opportunity to protect the loss of valuable lives. We convey our sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones in this tragic incident.
